If you’re not yet convinced that digital is the way to go, here are a
few points to consider:
Problems with analog format:
- Inferior image and sound quality compared to digital
- Difficult to start/stop precisely. This makes transcribing and
locating segments cumbersome and time-consuming.
- Difficult to add captions/subtitling without sophisticated
equipment
- Not very portable; requires VCR on hand to view data
- Storage

Digital advantages:
- Better quality for your money. Improved resolution,
signal-to-noise ratio, and color quality compared to analog formats.
- Easy to start/stop precisely. Segments can be cued and located
instantly. Transcribing (requiring repeated replays of a particular
segment) becomes simplified.
- Video editing is greatly simplified because the video can be
transferred to the computer without conversion, digitally edited
on-line, and then copied back to a digital tape or other media.
- Captions, subtitles are easy to add.
- Compressed video is easily stored and accessed.
- No loss of image quality when transferred from camera to
computer. Does not degenerate over time or with repeated usage.
- Allows multiple camera views to be displayed.
